Shana James: Understanding Alice

It is always great to have artists from other places. Everyone’s printmaking practice is different, responding to local influences and cultures. Shana’s generosity in bringing her artwork to Melbourne, her talks and demonstrations of lino printing techniques has made for a delightful experience.

Shana James, a well respected artist and teacher of printmaker at the Fremantle Arts Centre, flew into Melbourne with a big folio of prints which she exhibited at Firestation Print Studio from 26 September to 10 October 2015.
Based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, these images take the viewer along a mysterious inner journey where everything is implied. As Dr Spencer states in his catalogue essay for this exhibition: “The free-flowing consciousness of Shana’s imagery offers us … a series of events… that read like a tarot and work like the rabbit as a guide…..”
