Introduction to Chine Collé and Photopolymer Printmaking
Dianne Longley
2 Day workshop MARCH 18 & 19, 10am - 4pm
$390 / $340 members
INCULDES MATERIALS
Explore how you can add extra dimension to your prints by using gold leaf and coloured pencils on chine collé papers.
You can add fine Japanese papers as a layer between the supporting Western printing paper and your inked intaglio plate. You can cut shapes out of Japanese paper. You can use coloured pencils on the Japanese paper. And we can register areas of gold leaf to theJapanese paper to print under the intaglio image. We can also combine gold leaf with coloured pencils. We do need areas on the plate to be clear so that the gold leaf and coloured pencils can be seen ‘through’ the printed image.
We will work with A5 plates, 21 x 15 cms. Bring drawings and visual resources to the
workshop. You will draw the image onto double matte drafting film, using a range of
media, and we will expose the drawings onto Printight KM73 photopolymer plates.
Depending on the tonal range of the drawing you may need to do an exposure with a
random dot screen. Then we will experiment with chine collé variations. Single colour
Japanese paper. Cut shapes. Colour pencil on Japanese paper. Gold leaf on Japanese
paper, and combinations of chine collé. You will produce a series of prints with a range of chine collé variations.
The emphasis of the workshop is on understanding the variables involved. When working with the chine collé technique there are numerous considerations.
Materials fee $40 includes A5 photopolymer plate, double matte drafting film, intaglio
printing paper, a range of Japanese papers, coloured pencils, sheet of transfer gold leaf.
