Letterpress! Wood Type Formes for Large-Format Printing
Large-format printing with wood type was traditionally used by the printing trade as text for posters. Letterpress artists today utilise wood type for a variety of printed works, including books and other ephemera where large text is desired. The application of wood type letterpress offers a completely unique interpretation to printmaking and artwork, given the rarity of historical letterpress equipment still in use today and the widescale loss of fundamental letterpress skills.
In this beginner workshop you will learn traditional typesetting with wood type and use an historical letterpress proofing press adapted for flat-bed large-format final printing. The two-day workshop will focus on design, typesetting, squaring-off of formes, proofing, chase lock-ups, registration and final printing. The workshop is of special benefit to those who wish to go forward and access Firestation's monthly Letterpress Club, empowering participants with the necessary skills for working in an independent and ongoing manner with Firestation's wood type collection, chases and proofing press. Each participant will consolidate their learning through step-by-step directions and repetition over the two days, culminating in final artwork of large-format prints to a pre-set paper size.
All ink and paper supplies are provided in the workshop. Aprons are also available, or you are welcome to bring your own. We ask that you wear closed-in shoes in the studio. Firestation has a kitchen with tea and coffee, fridge and microwave, which you are welcome to use for making your lunch. There are also some great food shops in nearby High St and Glenferrie Rd.
We look forward to sharing our love of letterpress with you and the beauty of setting and printing wood type formes!
