A bit about Bronwyn Rees and her Artists Books Journey:
To all artist book enthusiasts: in 2008 at the Firestation Print Studio we received a beautiful pamphlet inviting us all to artists books for the newly established Libris Prize at Artspace Mackay. “An artists book can be anything” said Robert Heather, the curator responsible for setting up this whole thing. “Wow!” I thought, entered, and got in much to my surprise. I attended the accompanying conference and since then have made hundreds of books in my own unconventional way.
I’m not a fan of sewing and I also think the prints on the pages and the shapes we make with them are absolutely paramount. Thanks to my wonderful teachers, Joss Farmar Bowers, Adele Outteridge and Monica Oppen, I learned how to (mostly) avoid stitching and in fun and creative ways.
This year was a big one for any artist book maker – Northern Beaches (I was a finalist), Libris (I attended the conference and sold “Song of Solomon” to the private library Bibliotheca Librorum Apud Artificem), I am a finalist in the Crescendo Book Prize in Wollongong, and most exciting to me, I am in the magnificent exhibition at the NSW State Library “Paper Universe: The Book as Art”. I also taught book making workshops here at the Firestation, Impress Qld and Swan River Print Studio, WA.
