Details:

In this hands-on workshop, Trudy will introduce you to the magical printmaking process of Solarplate Etching.

Solarplate etching is a non-toxic intaglio etching process. Using the sun’s natural UV and water rather than toxic acids and solvents to etch the plate with remarkable results.

Trudy has been working with this medium for the past 8 years, exhibits and Port Jackson Press Print Gallery and Queenscliff Gallery and Workshop.

Trudy is deeply connected to our natural world. Her works on paper are created by printing many layers of solarplate etchings. With mindful observation, the initial drawings are etched in the very sun and water that her specimens are found.

Delicate textures and atmospheric depth bring Trudy’s love and empathy for the natural environment directly to the viewer.

Trudy enjoys teaching both children and adults and this year started teaching at Box Hill Institute in the Visual Arts Printmaking Department.

Be inspired as you transform your existing drawings, paintings and/or photographs into imaginative fine art prints, printed on beautiful printmaking papers and luscious printing inks.

 Solarplate Workshop

I would love participants to bring anything that inspires them, specimens, images, photographs or sketches.

PLATE SIZE PLATE SIZES: each participant will receive two A5 plates to work on. Plus Trudy will bring additional A6 and a few A4 plates for purchase at the workshop. So please keep this in mind with your sketches.

If you don’t have all the materials listed below, do not worry we will have items to share.

LIST OF MATERIALS

2 small containers for water and ink

Brushes for ink work

Nib pen for ink work

Black pens (opaque)

HB Pencils in various shades

Rubber gloves for inking up (tight garden gloves are re-usable)

Ruler, Stanley knife for cutting, Cutting Matt

PARTICIPANTS TO PROVIDE:

Pen & notebook, Apron, Closed toed shoes, Plastic scraper for spreading ink (if you have one)

Drawn Images, Photographs for reference

Note about using photographs to etch: If you have great photos you may like to have these photocopied onto a transparency film in black and white. Please keep in mind the A6 & A5 size of the solarplate and make your images slightly larger. The dark areas need to be dense enough to block the UV. If you have further questions don’t hesitate to ask.

I look forward to meeting you for an exciting weekend.
